    • Rear Suspension

      Overview

The ICE rear Road Response Suspension (R.R.S) system is the result of over 10 years of tireless development and testing. Providing up to 100mm (4 inches) of rear wheel travel, the suspension delivers comfort without compromising the accurate handling and control for which ICE trikes are famed. The system also minimises rear end squat during pedalling to ensure optimum power transfer.

      Adjustable

At ICE we pride ourselves on making the trike suit the customer. Our Road Response Suspension (R.R.S) is no exception and can be adjusted to suit your individual requirements.

      Durable

ICE trikes have toured the world, proving exceptionally reliable due to their engineering integrity and depth of quality. Our suspension upholds these values and requires virtually no maintenance, giving the famed ICE performance over many thousands of miles.

      Custom Designed Accessories

We've also designed accessories specifically tailored to our suspension system, such as our custom designed suspension racks and mudguard systems, to ensure you're ready for your next adventure.

(Rear suspension is fitted as standard on Adventure and Sprint specification levels 2, 2fs, 3 and 3fs.)

      Technical Information

The ICE Road Response Suspension (R.R.S) is based on a 7005 T6 series heat treated triangulated rear frame which combines exceptional stiffness and low weight to ensure precise handling even in extreme loading and riding situations. Utilising self lubricating and adjustable bushes running on a precision-ground hollow oversized stainless steel pins, the suspension pivot gives low friction conditions and virtually eliminates stiction within the suspension system.

Our Road Response Suspension (R.R.S) uses an elastomeric springing unit; this was selected due to its integral damping qualities, responsiveness and low maintenance requirements. Three grades of elastomer of differing stiffnesses combine with a five position adjustment system allow the suspension to be quickly and easily tuned to precisely suit the rider and riding conditions.

As with all ICE products our Road Response Suspension was developed and optimised on our CAD systems prior to the first development prototypes being made for testing.

    • Front Suspension

      Overview

The ICE front Road Response Suspension (R.R.S) is the result of over three years of continued development. The system has been specifically engineered to answer the suspension requirements of trikes. As well as using our in house expertise, we've worked with outside experts to ensure the delivered product meets our exacting standards. Made from heat treated 6061 T6 aircraft grade aluminium the unit delivers strength and stiffness combined with light weight to ensure you don't notice the suspension working, you just notice the smooth ride and controlled handling.

The ICE double leading link suspension has unique geometry which eliminates bump steer and dramatically reduces brake dive. The result of this is a smooth, controlled steering response which continues to deliver when the trail gets bumpy. As with our rear Road Response Suspension (R.R.S) our front suspension is adjustable for rider weight and riding style, ensuring your trike is optimised for your riding.

Here at ICE we prefer riding to trike servicing. That's why our front Road Response Suspension (R.R.S) system is designed to need virtually no maintenance to ensure you're not in the workshop but out exploring the trail.

      Technical Information

Designing front suspension for trikes provides unique challenges. How does the trike perform under heavy braking? How do you eliminate bump steer? After examining many options we decided to develop a double leading link system. The benefits of this system are as follows:

      Bump Steer

Bump steer is a situation in which the steering of a trike is affected by the movement of the front suspension. The ICE front Road Response Suspension (R.R.S) eliminates bump steer. This results from the fact that the steering track rod is independent of the suspension system and does not move up and down with the suspension system. This ensures that the trike does not start steering itself when it hits larger bumps and surface irregularities.

      Brake Dive

The ICE front suspension utilises a double leading link system with anti-dive built in. This is a feature which cannot be added to the suspension, but has to be designed in from the start. Many cycle suspension designs have no anti-dive, and some can even provoke diving under braking. Single link and parallel link designs are well known for producing unwanted suspension movement when the brakes are applied; the quicker you stop, the more undesirable the effect on the suspension.   Our double link system provides an element of stability under braking that helps to ensure a stable and predictable steering response under the most challenging conditions.

      Dynamic handling & Minimal roll

Here at ICE we love riding trikes which are sharp and poised with controlled and dynamic handling. One of our concerns when developing a front suspension was to avoid developing a trike with mushy or vague handling. To avoid this scenario, we tested different suspension systems experimenting with differing levels of suspension travel. We found that while longer travel systems performed well in mountain biking situations they did not give precise on road handling without requiring heavy and expensive anti-roll bars. At this point we decided to focus our suspension towards road, track, and trail use, allowing us to reduce the maximum travel to 40mm (1.57") to deliver precise handling and light weight. We'll freely admit that our front suspension is not great for 8" (200mm) mountain bike style drop offs, but if you're riding on roads, trails and tracks; we feel it delivers an unmatched balance of precise handling and a smooth comfortable ride.

      Durability and Longevity

ICE trikes are renowned for their durability and longevity, this leads to them being a popular choice for world tours. With this in mind, we've designed our front suspension for minimal maintenance. All moving parts are made from aircraft grade 6061 T6 aluminium which is precision ground or CNC machined followed by heat treating and hard-anodising processes. These moving parts run in replaceable self-lubricating bearing sleeves which are engineered to last the life of the trike. To further aid longevity the springing system is protected from grit and debris by a rubber gaiter.

      Elastomer Based System

The ICE front Road Response Suspension (R.R.S) system is based on a elastomeric spring unit. This has been optimised for both small bump and large bump response and also has a natural damping effect which helps control wheel movement over repeated surface irregularities.

      Fully Adjustable

At ICE we always try to fit the trike to the rider. This is why we offer a selection of spring units for the front suspension, so the suspension performance can be optimised to rider weight and riding style.

      Advanced Design and Engineering

The ICE front Road Response Suspension has been developed using the latest Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) technology. In addition to this, our test rigs have simulated over 100,000 full load cycles to ensure the suspension is up to rigorous use, many riders won't go this far.... but it's nice to know.

    • Rider Positioning System

      Overview

At ICE we believe that good rides start with a trike which fits well. Our Rider Positioning System (R.P.S) covers a combination of features which we've developed to ensure the perfect rider fit.

Adjustable Boom and Seat Angle Adjustment

This starts with our adjustable boom which allows the boom to be extended and retracted to fit your leg length. Riders can then adjust the seat angle to one of four positions over a 7.5 degree range. This may not sound like much adjustment but having the seat angle just right for you makes a big difference to your comfort. The ICE mesh seat can be tuned to the perfect fit to your back by adjusting individual straps on the back of the seat.

Custom Brackets and Short Arm Cranks and Seat Types

We've developed custom designed brackets for shorter and taller riders giving a total X-Seam range of 35 to 50 inches (see our rider fitting page for more details). Shorter riders can also order short arm cranks to ensure the most comfortable ride. Where fitted, the ICE headrest can be adjusted to provide optimum support.

      Anodised Parts

Adjustable parts such as the boom and the seat back rest clamp are hard black anodised, helping to prevent cosmetic wear under continuous use, the boom also has laser-etched fit markings which allow riders to quickly adjust the trike back to their ideal riding position.

      Technical Information

      FF Bracket for Short Riders

The FF bracket moves the front seat mount forward for very short legged riders. Short riders on the Sprint or Vortex who use this bracket and would like to be more upright would also need the TT bracket which can be ordered from your dealer.

      FB Bracket for Tall Riders

The FB bracket - moves the front seat mount backwards for very long legged riders. Note that using this bracket with the hard shell seat will reduce the maximum recline available.

      Short Crank Chainset Option

For shorter riders we can supply a front chainset with 152mm cranks in place of the more standard 170mm. These cranks come with alloy CNC machined 22/32/44 tooth chain rings on a 64/104 - 4 arm spider. The rings are smaller than those used on the standard chainset we use and hence give a more appropriate lower gear spread. Short cranks give greatly improved comfort for shorter riders and are recommended for those under approximately 5'4". They are essential for riders under approximately 5'2" to give comfort and proper fit on the trike. Please see Trike Size page for more information.

    • It Folds

      Overview

The ICE Compact Flat Twist (C.F.T) fold is standard on all ICE trikes. The folding is based around a lightweight heat treated aluminium hinge on the main frame. This allows the rear of the trike to pivot so that the rear wheel fits snugly between the front wheels. To fold, you simply release the seat by unscrewing the retention knobs and a quick release lever, once this has been done the handlebars are folded by loosening a quick release lever, from here it's just a quick release on the main frame and you're ready to go. Folding the trike is normally completed in well under 30 seconds. The fold has been designed to work with ICE accessories such as our racks and our Performance Tailbox.

Whether it's putting the trike in the back of the car to visit a local trail or loading it onto a small airplane for the tour of your life, the ICE C.F.T fold provides the convenience and portability you need.

    • Higher Riding Position

      Overview

The ICE Adventure has a custom designed frame to give a higher, more upright seating position. This allows easy access and gives a great view of the route ahead. The ICE Adventure also gives great ground clearance for those who are riding on rocky surfaces.

At ICE we're proud of our trike's handling and that's why we developed a custom frame with a higher seating position as opposed to just raising the seat height from a lower frame, thus ensuring you retain the hallmark ICE handling and ride qualities combined with the benefits of a higher seating position.

    • Wide range gearing

      Overview

One of the challenges for trike designers is giving a wide gear range on a machine with a smaller back wheel. Our custom Capreo gearing system gives a very wide range of gears enabling riders to go from climbing mountain passes on a fully loaded touring trike whilst to pedal at over 30mph (45 km/h) – if you fit enough!. A standard bicycle gearing system when used with a 20” rear wheel gives a much reduced gear range which can compromise hill climbing or high speed riding ability.

Bryan Ball Managing Editor Bentrideronline – ICE Sprint test May 2010

“All of the components worked well on the Sprint also. I especially appreciated the custom gearing package that ICE has designed. Shimano no longer makes the Capreo rear hub and its 9-26 cassette but ICE now builds their own version. The shiny sealed cartridge bearing ICE rear hub is miles nicer than the Shimano version ever was and the custom designed 9-32 9-Speed cassette provided a lot more range than the original as well. ICE matches up this wide range rear wheel gearing to a Truvativ Firex crankset with 26-36-48 chainrings. That yields a low gear of about 15″ and a high gear of 97″. That is just about pitch perfect for your average rider. The steps between the gears are very well spaced also. I never felt like I was making a huge jump between them. I rarely condone plagiarism but I would encourage every manufacturer of a trike with a 20″ drivewheel to copy this layout immediately. Even with the full suspension, the Sprint was quick enough to use all of those gear inches.”

    • Rear Wheel Drop Outs

      Overview

At ICE we're proud of the details which make our trikes special. Our rear wheel drop outs are an example of this approach, these press forged components save weight as well as looking great. They are also compatible with rear disc braking systems and hub gear systems to give you the flexibility to fit different components to your trike in the future.

There is deeper hidden design thinking behind the dropouts. On all our frames both dropouts are offset 6mm (1/4") to the right moving the chain over 6mm, this combined with our super strong un-dished rear wheels leaves the tyre in the centre of the trike while dramatically improving chain and derailleur clearances to the tyre.

      Overview

The boom on ICE trikes is hard black anodised on the section which interfaces with the main frame, this tough surface helps keep a smart finish on a boom which is frequently adjusted within the trike. The boom also has laser etched markings which allow riders to know their preferred boom position setting.

    • No Brake Steer Geometry

      Overview

During the last 25 years the ICE team have pursued a relentless development program to perfect the frame geometry. This has resulted in our No Brake Steer (N.B.S) frame geometry which ensures the trike steering is not affected by braking: vital for safe stopping from high speeds.

Stability at high speeds is key to any trike, here at ICE we ride in demanding hilly territory and regularly exceed 40 mph downhill during our high speed stability tests. This ensures that the trike is designed to deliver the ultimate ride on your next descent.

    • Mudguards (fenders)

      Overview

Here at ICE we've spent a long time developing what we believe is the ultimate trike mudguard system. Front mudguards on trikes are only supported from one side which gives a unique design challenge. A good mudguard must be stiff, strong, light and protect the rider from the wet. It may all sound obvious but not all trike mudguards are the same.

The ICE front mudguard is supported by a powder coated 6061 heat treated aluminium frame with a durable plastic guard body, the guard is adjustable for different tyre sizes, this ensures that it hugs the wheel and keeps the rider dry.

We're aware that many riders like the look of a naked un-guarded trike, for this reason the front guards are quick and easy to remove with just one bolt, and retain all adjustment settings so they fit perfectly when refitted.

For the rear wheel we've developed a lightweight guard which protects the rider from the wet and road grime.

    • Racks

      Overview

When we design a new trike we create accessories as part of the design process. This is very true for our rear rack. Made from aircraft grade heat treated aluminium, the geometry of the rack has been developed to ensure that even a very heavy load has a minimal effect on the action of the rear suspension.

To achieve this the rack has some moving parts; all pivot pins are made from ground stainless steel mounted in self-lubricating bushes to ensure a long and smooth life. We've put a lot of effort to ensure that the rack complements everyday life, for this reason all ICE trikes fitted with a rack can still fold. We've also added thoughtful features such as a comprehensive rear light mounting plate and tabs to help prevent your luggage straying forward whilst mounted on the top of the rack.

Customers can select from buying a top rack without the side plates or buying both the rack and the side plates for a wider range of carrying options.

    • Neck Rest

      Overview

The ICE neck rest is fully adjustable for both height and angle, and can be fitted to hard-shell and mesh seats to provide neck support for increased comfort on long rides. Fitted with a removable padded cover, the neck rest also includes a light mount which provides a good location for fixing any rear light with a "Seat Post" style mount. (Light not included).

    • Luggage Solutions

      Overview

The ICE side "handle bar bag" mount is built to fit a standard bicycle handlebar bag alongside either side of all mesh seats. The side handlebar bag mount is very useful for accessing items without getting off the trike.

For bigger loads, the ICE custom-designed "side pods" are ideal; these throw-over panniers fit directly to our mesh seats and are significantly lighter than any rack/pannier combination.

Radical ICE special side pods for mesh seats

We've had these bags specially made by Radical for use on all of our mesh seat models. At 2 x 12.5 liters capacity they are the perfect day riding or commuting bags with plenty of room for lunch, water-proofs or even an A4 folder. The pair of bags fit directly onto the seat so there is no need for a rear carrier (saving weight) or you can run these bags and a conventional pair of panniers if you want to add more touring capacity. The bags can be quickly removed from the trike just by lifting the pair off the seat. The two front straps are custom-sized to our seat so there is no need for bulky buckles. The top strap has an adjustable snap buckle and fits with or without the neck rest. The zip opening is arranged so that the front of each bag can be opened whilst riding along - perfect for getting at the snack bars or a camera. Available in black only with reflective tapes at the rear.

      Radical Side Panniers US

These larger bags (2 x 28 liters) offer many of the advantages of the ICE sidepods while allowing higher load capacity on trikes with rear suspension, as some of the load is supported by the seat instead of it all being on the cantilevered rack (compared to conventional panniers).

      Performance Tailbox

The ICE lockable performance tailbox is a great looking storage solution which is ideal for storing day items. Hand crafted from composite materials and finished in gloss black, it really is a unique finishing touch to your trike.

The rings are smaller than those used on the standard chain-set we use and hence give a more appropriate lower gear spread. Short cranks give greatly improved comfort for shorter riders and are recommended for those under approximately 5'4". They are essential for riders under approximately 5'2" to give comfort and proper fit on the trike. Please see Trike Size page for more information.

It is impossible to guarantee that a flat will never happen, but the Marathon Plus has the best defence against everyday tyre wreckers such as glass, flints or metal shards.

By: John Shook - USA, North Carolina, 01 August 2010

Edition: Adventure 1
Good Points: Great comfort, easy access, great handling
Bad Points: None to bare.
How do you ride? daily 20/30 miles, take on trips

Review:
I ride everyday that is not raining. I am 67 yrs old and the trike is extremly comfortable for me. No sore rear end!!!!. Gearing is perfect for my abilities. Avarage 11-12 mph for the most of the ride. I replaced the brake handles with locking brake type for parking. The drum brakes work extremly well. Shifting is mostly smooth. It is just a great pleasure to ride.
