    • Rider Positioning System

      Overview

At ICE we believe that good rides start with a trike which fits well. Our Rider Positioning System (R.P.S) covers a combination of features which we've developed to ensure the perfect rider fit.

Adjustable Boom and Seat Angle Adjustment

This starts with our adjustable boom which allows the boom to be extended and retracted to fit your leg length. Riders can then adjust the seat angle to one of four positions over a 7.5 degree range. This may not sound like much adjustment but having the seat angle just right for you makes a big difference to your comfort. The ICE mesh seat can be tuned to the perfect fit to your back by adjusting individual straps on the back of the seat.

Custom Brackets and Short Arm Cranks and Seat Types

We've developed custom designed brackets for shorter and taller riders giving a total X-Seam range of 35 to 50 inches (see our rider fitting page for more details). Shorter riders can also order short arm cranks to ensure the most comfortable ride. Where fitted, the ICE headrest can be adjusted to provide optimum support.

      Anodised Parts

Adjustable parts such as the boom and the seat back rest clamp are hard black anodised, helping to prevent cosmetic wear under continuous use, the boom also has laser-etched fit markings which allow riders to quickly adjust the trike back to their ideal riding position.

      Technical Information

      FF Bracket for Short Riders

The FF bracket moves the front seat mount forward for very short legged riders. Short riders on the Sprint or Vortex who use this bracket and would like to be more upright would also need the TT bracket which can be ordered from your dealer.

      FB Bracket for Tall Riders

The FB bracket - moves the front seat mount backwards for very long legged riders. Note that using this bracket with the hard shell seat will reduce the maximum recline available.

      Short Crank Chainset Option

For shorter riders we can supply a front chainset with 152mm cranks in place of the more standard 170mm. These cranks come with alloy CNC machined 22/32/44 tooth chain rings on a 64/104 - 4 arm spider. The rings are smaller than those used on the standard chainset we use and hence give a more appropriate lower gear spread. Short cranks give greatly improved comfort for shorter riders and are recommended for those under approximately 5'4". They are essential for riders under approximately 5'2" to give comfort and proper fit on the trike. Please see Trike Size page for more information.

    • It Folds

      Overview

The ICE Compact Flat Twist (C.F.T) fold is standard on all ICE trikes. The folding is based around a lightweight heat treated aluminium hinge on the main frame. This allows the rear of the trike to pivot so that the rear wheel fits snugly between the front wheels. To fold, you simply release the seat by unscrewing the retention knobs and a quick release lever, once this has been done the handlebars are folded by loosening a quick release lever, from here it's just a quick release on the main frame and you're ready to go. Folding the trike is normally completed in well under 30 seconds. The fold has been designed to work with ICE accessories such as our racks and our Performance Tailbox.

Whether it's putting the trike in the back of the car to visit a local trail or loading it onto a small airplane for the tour of your life, the ICE C.F.T fold provides the convenience and portability you need.

    • ICE Optimised Frame

      Overview

The frame is the heart of any trike, dealing with the irregularities of the road surface, handling external forces and the forces exerted by the rider. A well designed and constructed frame is key to providing a great riding experience. The ICE optimised frame is constructed from a 4130 Chromoly heat treated cruciform combined with 7005 T6 heat treated aluminium boom and rear end sections. This provides a stiff platform for efficient power transfer whilst providing a comfortable ride which minimises rider fatigue on longer trips. The frame is fitted with cable guides and brazes-ons to ensure tidy cable routing and enable riders to attach racks and other accessories. For added convenience all new ICE trike frames fold.

At ICE we take great pride in the detail finish of our products, many items of the frame are CNC machined to reduce weight and deliver a product which is truly exceptional, spend some time examining our rear drop outs or king posts and I'm sure you'll agree the effort’s been worthwhile.

    • Flag & Mirror

      Overview

All ICE trikes have a high quality Mirrycle mirror and ICE custom 3 piece flag fitted as standard.

The Mirrycle mirror attaches to the handlebars and gives a clear view of approaching traffic.

The ICE 3 piece flag fits into a mount on the seat. The flag has been designed for quiet operation and minimal aerodynamic drag; it has also been thoroughly tested to ensure it is robust in strong sunlight and heavy rain and high winds.

    • Dynamic Handling

      Overview

During the last 25 years the ICE team have pursued a relentless development program to perfect the frame geometry. This has resulted in our No Brake Steer (N.B.S) frame geometry which ensures the trike steering is not affected by braking: vital for safe stopping from high speeds.

Stability at high speeds is key to any trike, here at ICE we ride in demanding hilly territory and regularly exceed 40 mph during our high speed stability tests. This ensures that the trike is designed to deliver the ultimate ride on your next descent.

    • Stability and Aerodynamics

      Overview

The Vortex has been developed to be the ultimate long distance high performance trike. The lower Vortex riding position gives great stability and reduces frontal area which in turn reduces aerodynamic drag. The adjustable seat angle allows riders to change the seat recline position between 28 and 44 degrees allowing you to customise the trike for your riding style.

This low stance also results in a very low centre of gravity which gives great stability during aggressive cornering, this combined with ICE geometry and frame technology form the engineering logic behind the Vortex’s sure footed handling.

The lower riding position is achieved through the use of an upswept cross axle and a low stack sear height resulting in a comfortable riding position which makes the Vortex ideal for long distance high performance riding.

    • ICE Paint System

      Overview

We at ICE are proud of our trikes and want to ensure that you share that pride for many years to come.

Our painting process begins with a thorough preparation of our frames to remove any welding residues, the main frame is then painted with an ICE selected tough powder coat which gives a rich base coat, this is followed by a lacquer coat to gives that lustrous finish which characterises ICE trikes. The frames are then given an internal anti corrosion treatment to aid longevity. Parts such as the boom and the rear end which interface with the main frame are given a hard black anodised coating which helps ensure that these parts stay showroom fresh after many years of use.

    • Rigorous Testing

      Overview

All ICE trike models go through a structured and rigorous testing program. Only once this has been completed successfully are the products released to the market. This testing consists of both real world riding with data logging equipment and bench tests which simulate repeated harsh riding conditions.

It’s unlikely that you will ever push your trike to these extremes in normal riding, but it’s good to know that your trike was built for much more than everyday riding.

    • Designed for the Long Haul

      Overview

ICE trikes are chosen by some of the world's more adventurous long distance touring cyclists. Long rides over rough and uncompromising terrain, combined with extreme climbs and descents often form the backbone of these journeys. In addition to the extreme terrain, the trikes are normally heavily loaded and often receive maintenance only when time and the journey allows.

Through all these challenges adventurers continue to choose standard ICE trikes for their adventure. So you can be sure, whatever your next ride, your trike is ready for the challenge.

    • Rear Wheel Drop Outs

      Overview

At ICE we're proud of the details which make our trikes special. Our rear wheel drop outs are an example of this approach, these press forged components save weight as well as looking great. They are also compatible with rear disc braking systems and hub gear systems to give you the flexibility to fit different components to your trike in the future.

There is deeper hidden design thinking behind the dropouts. On all our frames both dropouts are offset 6mm (1/4") to the right moving the chain over 6mm, this combined with our super strong un-dished rear wheels leaves the tyre in the centre of the trike while dramatically improving chain and derailleur clearances to the tyre.

    • Mudguards (fenders)

      Overview

Here at ICE we've spent a long time developing what we believe is the ultimate trike mudguard system. Front mudguards on trikes are only supported from one side which gives a unique design challenge. A good mudguard must be stiff, strong, light and protect the rider from the wet. It may all sound obvious but not all trike mudguards are the same.

The ICE front mudguard is supported by a powder coated 6061 heat treated aluminium frame with a durable plastic guard body, the guard is adjustable for different tyre sizes, this ensures that it hugs the wheel and keeps the rider dry.

We're aware that many riders like the look of a naked un-guarded trike, for this reason the front guards are quick and easy to remove with just one bolt, and retain all adjustment settings so they fit perfectly when refitted.

For the rear wheel we've developed a lightweight guard which protects the rider from the wet and road grime.

How do you ride? Car free/light: commuting, pleasure rides, errands

Review:
I had never owned a recumbent trike before, or actually a decent bike of any kind. However, I because as a biology graduate student, I know that riding more and driving less is good for both me and the environment, I decided to look for the perfect vehicle for all around human powered transportation, and found it in the ICE Vortex. I did not have the opportunity to try it out before I bought it, but jumped in with both feet, based on the number of positive reviews of the previous ICE models. The instructions were easy to follow, although it still took me all day to assemble the trike. I purchased it with Radical bags, bar end shifters, fenders, chainguard, headrest, lights, and quick release kit. I ended up removing the rear fender, because I could never get the thing adjusted so it wasn't trying to twist on me, and I also removed the front chainguard, as it seemed a little bulky, and kept shifting position slightly. The Vortex is a dream to ride, and I have been on long rides (over 60 miles) without having numbness in the posterior, hands, or feet. It behaves very well when fully laden, and you can stuff quite a lot of groceries into the Radical bags. A well designed, sturdy machine, fun to ride, and responsive without feeling twitchy.

An excellent trike

How do you ride? Commuting about 100 miles/week

Review:
This is a replacement for a Windcheetah which I had for nearly 10 years. Overall, it's a lovely machine and I am very pleased with it. Putting the machine together out of the box took a lot longer than the instructions suggested - but perhaps I was just being slow (or fussy!). The fiddliest bit was setting the spacing washers for the disk brakes, where I ended up using some extra washers in addition to the ones supplied. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, including most of the accessories, although the bracket for the computer sensor took some head scratching... I didn't go for the head rest, and used a rear reflector bracket in that position to hold the rear reflector above the height of the back wheel, as well as a hook on which to hang the bracket for the radical pannier bags. I also used a piece of dowelling as a bracket for a back light, bolted to one of the off-side holes that would be used to mount the flag holder. Once the trike was on the road, it was a pleasure to ride right from the start. At first, I think I wasn't pedaling evenly, as the chain tended to bounce and cause the chain tube to hit the frame or rear mudguard. A few hundred miles later, that has pretty much disappeared. I extended the boom by about 1cm without adjusting the chain, and I had to tweak the rear gear mechanism for bottom gear, but overall the gears are working very smoothly. The rear view mirror is a really nice addition, and very reassuring. The brakes are light to use, but very effective. I haven't bothered to fit the "love handles" to the sides of the seat, but the riding position is comfortable and very effective, and I am quite happy leaning round fast corners. The steering is light and very precise, and gives me a lot of confidence. So far I have only broken the speed limit once (downhill from SU840884). Has to be done! A great trike and a lot of fun.
